It’s no secret that a well maintained fence will not only complement your Northern Virginia home’s exterior and landscape, but will also last for many years. Painting your wood fence protects the wood and helps the fence stand up to the elements and last longer. Painting your wood fence can be a tedious job, but well worth it.
Follow these tips when preparing and painting your Northern Virginia wood fence:
- Before painting, clean your fence and get rid of cobwebs and other debris using rubber gloves, a cloth, and warm water. Also scrape away any flaking or loose paint.
- Check for any insect damage before painting your fence and make sure boards are firmly attached.
- Choose outdoor paint with ultraviolet (UV) inhibitors to protect against sun damage.
- Purchase high quality paintbrushes, including a wide brush for the fronts and backs and smaller brush for the sides.
- Follow a pattern while painting; work on the fence on section at a time, starting at the top of the boards down the front of each board and the edge. Once all boards are complete, go back to the first board in the section and paint the other side and remaining edge – that way, you won’t get wet paint on your hands during the painting process.
- Avoid painting in direct sun, as this will make the paint dry too fast.
- If using a paint sprayer, be aware of wind direction and overspray before you begin.
